Increasing Social Skills And Decreasing Challenging Behaviour
Often individuals with disabilities, who also have a severe reputation due to challenging behaviors, do not realize full inclusion into the workplace. Individuals may have difficulty locating employment opportunities and/or once employed, may not be filly involved in the work culture as are their co-workers. Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) is an established approach that can be used to enhance employment success including job performance, as well as, social inclusion in the workplace. PBS incorporates the science of applied behavioral analysis and the philosophy of person centered planning to enhance quality of life. It is a collaborative, assessment-based process to develop effective, individualized interventions for people with challenging behaviors. Support plans are developed that focus on proactive, and educative approaches and facilitate optimal inclusion (University of Southern Florida-PBS Project). Several basic assumptions are made: all behavior has a communicative intent all people can learn; all people belong; all people have gifts and strengths; teams are essential for positive behavior support; and families/friends, including the focus person are critical members of the team. Participants in this session, will be introduced to the PBS process and its application in employment settings and facilitating employment success.
I am currently with Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities, a university affiliated program at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have been in Virginia for five years now and I love it! I moved from Colorado where I spent 14 years as a general education teacher and 4 years in the field of special education. While in Colorado I also served as a behavioral consultant and integration facilitator for a large school division.
I am project director of a federally funded program that provides training and technical assistance for children with dual sensory impairments and also teach several graduate level courses at VCU. I also direct the project: Futures Planning: Helping Communities Welcome People With Disabilities. Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies, and I am fortunate to be able to incorporate my love of traveling with my desire to share ideas and strategies regarding person-centered planning, collaborative IEPs, family/professional partnerships, and inclusive schools and communities. I am looking forward to learning and sharing with you!
